Ang layunin ng Online games ay isa sa gamot sa mga kabaatang nakakaranas ng stress, pagod at pagkabagot. Bagamat kailangan ng bawat isa ang limitasyon.

Ang Online game ay isang laro na gumagamit ng iba’t ibang uri ng computer network. Madalas na ginagamit dito ang Internet o kahit anong pang katumbas na teknolohiya, subalit nagagamit naman ng mga laro ang kahit anong teknolohiya meron: modem bago ang Internet, at hard wired terminal bago ang modem. Ang pagpapalawak ng online gaming ay sumasalamin sa pangkalahatang pagunlad ng mga network na computer mula sa maliit na lokal na network sa Internet hanggang sa paglago sa pagkunekta sa Internet mismo. Ang mga online games at maaaring sumaklaw mula sa simpleng mga salita lamang hanggang sa mga laro na may kumplikadong grapika at virtual na mundo na maraming mga manlalaro. Maraming mga online games ang may online na komunidad, na nagiging paraan ng pakikisalamuha sa ibang tao na kabligtaran kung solong naglalaro.

Some are also concerned about gaming addiction or social stigma.[5] Online games have attracted players from a variety of ages, nationalities, and occupations.[6][7][8]The online game content can also be studied in the scientific field, especially gamers‘ interactions within virtual societies in relation to the behavior and social phenomena of everyday life.[6][7] It has been argued that, since the players of an online game are strangers to each other and have limited communication, the individual player’s experience in an online game is not essentially different from playing with artificial intelligence players.[9] Online games also have the problem of not being permanently playable, unlike purchased retail games, as they require special servers in order to function.

The design of online games can range from simple text-based environments to the incorporation of complex graphics and virtual worlds.[3] The existence of online components within a game can range from being minor features, such as an online leaderboard, to being part of core gameplay, such as directly playing against other players. Many online games create their own online communities, while other games, especially social games, integrate the players’ existing real-life communities.[4]
